Presidents Message: Spin Class is Starting

Spin class starts tomorrow night, November 7th at 6:30, at The Strong Center. Below is included the write-up on costs and a link to online registration. Some of you more mature members may qualify for free gym membership through a program called “Silver Sneakers”. If you haven’t been to The Strong Center, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. It’s clean, well lit, and the equipment is new. Most of the bikes have SPD pedals, and have electronics giving pedal speed, heart rate (you need to wear your own chest strap), and watts. The spin area is bright, clean, and well ventilated. It even has double doors which can be opened to the outdoors; the spin area is separate from the rest of the gym.

For those of you who haven’t taken part in my spin classes before, they are based on the Carmichael Training System’s program called “Training Right, Training Smart”. It is a cycling specific program designed to maintain or build cycling specific fitness during the winter months. The program is “customized” for the individual through a workout I call the CTS “Trail” which allows us to compute a baseline to accurately quantify work load. We will do the first CTS “Trail” this year on Tuesday, November 14th.

When I started leading these classes, over twenty years ago, I had no idea that there was a social aspect to training indoors with a group. I typically rode my rollers in the garage by myself. It was hard, even with music. I don’t know why having other red and sweaty faces to look at makes it easier, but it does, and remember no one gets dropped in spin class.

CBC’s indoor training program will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings, beginning November 7th and continuing through March 29. Bill Stevenson leads these workouts at The Strong Center on Mottman Road, with rides designed to improve specific cycling skills such as climbing, time trialing, and sprinting.

Training sessions begin at 6:30 pm and typically run for an hour.  There will also be occasional 75 minute rides. A heart rate monitor is a useful training aid, but not required.  Be sure to bring a water bottle.  The training program uses the gym’s spin bikes, which accept SPD cleats.  We may also use The Strong Center’s virtual reality cycling theater, with POV cycling footage and beautiful scenery.

For 2017-18, the training program will be run directly through The Strong Center, with a couple of options to choose from:

Enrollment in each session of the program is $99. This covers your attendance at all of the training rides in that session:

Session 1: Nov. 7 – January 18 (21 sessions)

Session 2: January 23 – March 29 (21 sessions)

You also have the option of adding-on full gym membership for the 11 weeks of each session for $30.  There are approximately 28 classes per week available, including yoga, fitness, core, self-defense, and additional cycling classes.
